Wireless broadband is the solution. UTOPIA is a consortium of 14 Utah cities engaged in deploying and operating a 100% fiber optic network to every business and household (about 140,000) within its footprint. Operating at the wholesale level, it supports open access and promotes competition in all telecommunications services.

Wireless is well suited as a distribution technology within homes or as a mobile solution where less-than-comprehensive telecommunications capabilities are adequate. But ultimately, to be effective, wireless must eventually tie in to a fiber infrastructure. UTOPIA will use wireless where it makes sense within its fiber network.
