Fixed Broadband Wireless DSL Network - Luanda region of Angola

February 3, 2003 —Airspan Networks, Inc. a leading worldwide provider of fixed broadband wireless DSL networks, announced today that it has been awarded a $2 million order to provide its AS4000 wireless DSL solution to Telesel of Angola, one of only four carriers to be awarded a public telephony operator license by the government regulator, INACOM. Initially, Telesel will provide high-speed Internet and voice services to subscribers in the Luanda region, with expansion plans in place to serve the Benguela area by mid 2003 and other provinces at a rate of two to four provinces per year. The demand for broadband access is expected to be high with plans to service more than 9,000 subscribers in the first phase of the rollout.

With a population of 12 million, Angola's communications infrastructure has suffered largely by 25 years of civil war. Today, nationwide teledensity is less than 1.0 percent. Construction has begun on an ambitiously novel project to provide internet service without need of wires or phone lines. When it's complete, SchoolNet Namibia, which provides internet service to Namibia's learners, will be able to hook up hundreds of schools via a narrow-band radio network that will cover most of the densely populated North, as well as urban pockets. This network will cover almost 900 schools and 54,000 km2," said Kyle Johnston, SchoolNet's technical lead on the project, as he presented the wireless connectivity plan to an audience of African regulators, policy makers and NGO staff on Monday . "We'll use a combination of radio to distribute the connection. It works very well, with no down time."

Wireless Business Solutions (WBS) of South Africa plans to deploy ArrayComm Inc.’s iBurst broadband wireless system to provide mobile data access services to customers across the country. Initial deployment of the service will begin in 2005 in Johannesburg, Pretoria, Cape Town and Durban.
