North American Hotspot Deployments Exploding: 85% of Mobile Phones will be Wi-Fi enabled by 2009

February 9, 2004 — North American hotspot deployments have exploded in recent months and are expected to grow from 10,000 in 2003 to nearly 200,000 by 2009, according to a recently released report by emerging wireless research firm, ON World. ON World predicts that more than 90 percent of laptops and handheld computers will be Wi-Fi enabled by 2007 and 85 percent of all mobile phones will be Wi-Fi enabled by 2009. The rapid expansion of Wi-Fi enabled devices will increase user numbers rapidly over the projection period up from 5 million users worldwide in 2003 to 86 million in 2009.

These emerging trends are leading to a hotspot land grab by the telcos, mobile operators and many new startups.

Why 802.11 is Underhyped: Wi-Fi will be Embedded in Every Electronic Product Under the Sun!!!

February 4, 2004, CNET News.com - In five short years, a backwardly compatible 802.11g chip began to offer about 25 times the performance at about one-twentieth the price of the first-generation radios in this market. As before, these low price points are leading to increased market opportunities and lower and lower prices. Currently, 802.11 radios are a 50-million-unit-per-year market, but history suggests that this is merely the beginning. With some 802.11 radio chips approaching $5 price points, Wi-Fi will likely be embedded in every electronic product under the sun.

Make no mistake about it: 802.11, or one of its backwardly compatible descendants, will dominate the wireless communications sector over the next 10 years the same way the x86 architecture dominates computing and that Ethernet dominates networking. There will be numerous doubters and numerous challengers, but they will all succumb to the inescapable power of the first true open-standard radio.

With Growing # of Wi-Fi HotSpots ...Cordless Wi-Fi VoIP Phones could Replace Cellular Phones

January 23, 2004, CNET News.com - Broadband equipment maker Netopia on Friday announced a program designed to spur manufacturers to develop more Wi-Fi cordless phones. Wi-Fi and voice over Internet Protocol (VoIP) are two of the hottest communication technologies around. Many residential consumers have already begun networking their homes with wireless equipment based on the Institute of Electrical and Electronics Engineers' 802.11 standards. Large telecommunication providers have started deploying wireless hot spots in hotels, airports and restaurants throughout the world. This allows users of Wi-Fi enabled PDAs (personal digital assistants) or laptops to connect to the Internet wirelessly.

VoIP phone calling that uses the Internet rather than traditional phone networks also is starting to gain traction in both the business and residential market. Cordless Wi-Fi phones are a natural extension to these technologies. These phones, made by manufacturers such as Cisco Systems, provide consumers with the same features and functionality offered in wireline IP phones. They also will allow people to take their phones with them so that they can make calls when wandering in and out of Wi-Fi hot spots, just as they would using their laptop computers. Currently, the number of public Wi-Fi hot spots and access points around the globe is relatively low, but the number is growing. For example, MCI recently announced plans to add more hot spots to its network.

July 21, 2003, CNET News.com - Hot-spot deal adds fuel to Wi-Fi debate
Sprint PCS and AT&T Wireless are negotiating whether to let each other's Wi-Fi subscribers roam between their two networks, a Sprint PCS executive said Monday. The partnership would allow subscribers of AT&T Wireless Wi-Fi service to use the 2,100 wireless "hot spot" locations that Sprint PCS plans to launch later this year, said Jason Guesman, business marketing director at Sprint PCS. Similarly, Sprint customers would have access to AT&T's wireless network.

The talks highlight a split among major U.S. cellular carriers over how to operate their networks of hot spots, which are public areas where Wi-Fi-based wireless access to the Internet or to a corporate computer system is sold. AT&T Wireless and Sprint PCS want their customers to roam freely among different networks. But hot-spot operators Cometa and T-Mobile USA prefer to keep their locations off-limits to major competitors.

Roaming gives cellular service providers a quick way to expand and take advantage of the popularity of Wi-Fi networking. But closed-network supporters say their rivals are likely to create a bad first impression in setting up clunky networks that pose enormous administrative problems.

May 19, 2003, CNET News.com - SBC plans public Wi-Fi network
SBC has recently taken steps toward building a public wireless local area network, the company said Monday. The service is an attempt to fend off competition from the cable industry, say analysts, who note that SBC is the second major telephone company to use the popularity of Wi-Fi wireless networks to better compete against such rivals. SBC spokesman Michael Coe said the broadband and telephone provider has begun shopping for the equipment needed to create public hot spots, which are places such as coffee shops or hotels where SBC customers can connect to the Internet or their office computers without wires.

May 14, 2003, CNET News.com - Wi-Fi as Weapon -- Telecoms vs. Cable
Telecommunications companies are starting to use Wi-Fi as a weapon against the cable industry's ambitions to infiltrate the local telephone market. New York-based Verizon is experimenting with the Wi-Fi wireless-networking technology to see if it will successfully add to the bundling phenomena--which currently can include local phone service, broadband access and cellular--and if it will help stave off cable companies' efforts to gain share in the local phone-service industry, according to some analysts. "Telcos are scared for good reason that cable operators are taking away their subscribers," said David Burstein, the editor of industry newsletter DSL Prime.

Tuesday May 13, Wireless.NewsFactor.com - Verizon's 'hotspots' raise wireless stakes
Verizon Communications on Tuesday raised the stakes in the race to sign up high-speed internet surfers with a service to provide wireless broadband access for customers in Manhattan. The telecommunications carrier has converted 150 of the city's phone booths into wi-fi "hotspots", where subscribers to its digital subscriber line (DSL) broadband service can access the internet through laptops and handheld devices. Verizon aims to add 850 more such sites by the end of year, creating the largest public wi-fi installation in any one location. "The goal is to offer the best broadband experience to anyone in the marketplace," said Bruce Gordon, president of Verizon's retail markets group. Mr Gordon stressed that the company would gauge customer interest before expanding the service to other parts of the country. But he added: "Any place that you see Verizon pay phones could in the future be logical places for Verizon HotSpots."

April 28, 2003, In-Stat/MDR - Hooking Up Hotspots Provide Carriers with New Revenue Opportunities
The continued growth of hotspots over the next several years will make hotspot backhaul (the last mile connection that carries data traffic from the public wireless LAN to the Internet) a significant revenue opportunity, specifically for WAN providers, reports In-Stat/MDR. The high-tech market research firm estimates that worldwide revenues from backhaul services will grow from $70.5 million in 2002 to well over half a billion by 2007 while the number of connections needed to support these hotspots will grow just over 10 fold during the same time frame.

"While all of the attention has been on wireless cards, coffee shops, and how to combine them to generate revenues, the backhaul already presents a revenue stream coming out of the hotspot market," says Daryl Schoolar, a Senior Analyst with In-Stat/MDR. "Hotspots or public WLAN Internet access, regardless of shape, size, or business model, need a backhaul connection to carry data traffic to the Internet. For WAN providers, hotspots represent another market opportunity for selling Internet access. Along with backhaul service revenues, selling backhaul can open up other value-add service opportunities for WAN providers, such as provisioning of IP VPN, Voice over IP, hotspot billing and WLAN monitoring in addition to other opportunities in network equipment sales and installation."

April 18th, 2003, CNET News.com - Cisco Wi-Fi phone due in June
Cisco Systems intends to introduce a portable Wi-Fi phone in the next few months, adding its stamp of approval to the emerging business technology. The 7920 phone is essentially a wireless version of Cisco's 7960 IP (Internet Protocol) phone, which uses a wired Ethernet connection to make and receive telephone calls. However, the 7920 will have a wireless handset that uses an office's Wi-Fi network to connect. The device will start shipping in June, executives said Friday. Its price has not yet been disclosed. Cisco will have plenty of competition when it introduces the 7920, especially from Wi-Fi equipment maker SpectraLink, which sells a similar phone. Handset maker Motorola and Avaya also are at work on their own versions.

These device are a coupling of several technologies that businesses are beginning to adopt, despite a slowdown in corporate spending over the last few years. The list includes voice over IP, a merger of telephone and computer systems; Wi-Fi, which creates 300-foot zones where devices don't need wires to connect; and cell phones, which are in the hands of more than 50 percent of Americans and a staple of most business professionals.

April 9th, 2003, CNET News.com - Support grows for rural DSL alternative
Intel, Nokia and Fujitsu have joined the WiMax forum, an organisation that promotes 802.16a, a long-distance, high-bandwidth wireless standard that would cost less to deploy than either DSL or Cable Gear makers have joined a nonprofit group looking to promote wireless access to high-speed broadband connections. Component and equipment makers including Intel, Nokia and Fujitsu, announced on Tuesday that they will be working with WiMAX to help promote and certify compatibility and interoperability of equipment for wirelessly accessing high-speed broadband connections. WiMAX promotes the 802.16a standard for wide-area broadband access, and the gear makers want to provide components to tap into those 802.16a networks. The 802.16a networks have a range of up to about 30 miles with data transfer speeds of up to 70mbps.

US politicians have been advocating wireless broadband as a third means -- along with cable and DSL -- of delivering high-speed connectivity to the masses. Earlier this year, senators proposed the Jumpstart Broadband Act, which would allocate additional radio spectrum for unlicensed use by wireless broadband devices. WiMAX is also initially looking to draft wireless "hot-spot" operators -- such as Cometa Networks, T-Mobile and Wayport -- to support 802.16a technology. Hot spots provide wireless Web access using technology linked to another family of standards known as Wi-Fi, or 802.11a and 802.11b. These hot spot companies could use the 802.16a equipment, which has a range of up to about 30 miles and a data transfer capacity of up to 70MBps, to replace the expensive wired Web connections they use to provide access to Wi-Fi networks, she said.

Convergence is also coming. This year Optus will begin marketing a system to allow roaming between wi-fi and GPRS networks. As users move in and out of range of a wi-fi base station, their personal digital assistant or notebook will automatically switch from one network to another without dropping the session. Friday 6 June 2003 - French GSM operators collaborate on Wi-Fi - Société Française du Radiotéléphone (SFR), Bouygues Télécom and France Télécom, a subsidiary of Orange France, operators of France's three GSM mobile phone networks, are all launching wireless Lan hotspots. However a lack of service standards for access to Wi-Fi networks makes roaming difficult. The Wi-Fi interoperability specification for wireless Lans, and the IEEE 802.11b standard on which it is built, define the technical aspects of the network but not how subscribers to public network services are identified or authenticated, the operators said. This makes life difficult for users and is hampering development of the market for public-access Wi-Fi services.

To encourage development of Wi-Fi networks in France, the companies will open up their wireless Lan hotspots to one another's customers by the end of the year. The three will also create an industry body, open to all public wireless Lan operators, to standardise systems for accessing wireless hotspots and to give hotspot operators reciprocal, non-discriminatory access to one another's networks in France.
