fixed broadband wireless services - American Internet Exchange has wireless points of presence throughout the Washington DC metro area. We have experience with unlicensed frequencies in the 2.4 Ghz and 5.8 Ghz frequency as well as various licensed frequencies.

Wireless access is a great alternative to Verizon mediated circuits due to its scalability and price. Usually, wireless has a lower monthly recurring cost due to the lack of a local loop. The 2.4 Ghz band has a unique story. During the 50's while scientists were working on microwave technologies the 2.4 Ghz frequency was discovered to posses a unique trait, it is the exact frequency that makes water boil. This is why the 2.4 frequency has difficulties penetrating foliage. Due to this unique trait the world governments have agreed to keep the 2.4 Ghz frequency unlicensed, allowing ISP's and customers to take advantage of a great technology.

During the initial implementations of wireless technologies, equipment providers and ISP's learned some valuable lessons about reliability and security. Now with the most recent round of equipment, these issues have been resolved. Security is now as strong as wire line technologies while giving the advantage of wirelesses ease of deployment. Washington DC metro area.

Wi-Fi 802.11 (Wi-Fi stands for Wireless Fidelity) offers high-speed connections up to 11 megabytes per second — without wires. It works the same way a cordless phone does, transmitting a signal from a base station to a receiving device, and is available without a license from the FCC. Wi-FI signals operate in the 2.4 and 5Ghz radio bands and are designed to transmit data at broadband speeds. The speed of the connection you receive is governed by several factors including the number of users accessing a single point, the distance the device is from the access point, any obstructions that might block the signal and the speed of the line that connects to the access point. Wi-Fi signals do not transmit as well through metal or concrete buildings, but work reasonably well through many other types of walls and glass.
