WiMAX Telecom GmbH was the sole provider to obtain the nationwide rights to the WiMax frequencies in Austria at the auction of October 4, 2004. With a range of 25 kilometers and transmission rates of up to 70 Mbps, this new radio technology is expected to become standard for wireless broadband internet access and mobile telephony. WiMAX, which provides a throughput rate 30 times faster than UMTS 3G, is the first technology offering both realtime and unlimited mobile services. LTKK / Tietoliikennetekniikanlaitos - WLPR.NET is a research network of a three-year WLAN-project of Datacommunications Laboratory of Lappeenranta University of Technology (LUT). Project researches open, operator-neutral network environment (so called Lappeenranta-model). WLPR.NET-network is a network open for everybody. You can join into the network using a WLAN-card that supports wireless local area technology (IEEE 802.11b). The network offers local services which can be provided by private persons or companies (map-services, games etc.).

Only the organisations involved into the project have an access to the Internet from WLPR.NET network. Other users need a commercial Internet Service Provider (ISP), that has joined into the WLPR.NET network. This kind of service provider does not exist in WLPR.NET network yet, but Kymen Puhelin has been testing the functionality of the network since summer 2002 and serving commercial connections is technically possible with a rather rapid timetable. Coverage area of the network covers Skinnarila, Sammonlahti and the harbor of Lappeenranta. Coverage of the network in the town centre will improve during the year 2003. Companies can participate building the network by giving internal network capacity or wireless access points for the usage of the network or participating the project as a support member.

1/22/2004, Broadband Wireless Business Magazine - Hughes Inks Deal With Italy’s Wind on LMDS Radios - Hughes Network Systems Inc. (HNS) has reached an agreement to provide its AIReach Broadband 9000 wireless access system to Wind Telecomunicazioni S.p.A. for a nationwide LMDS deployment in Italy. Wind, a European operator offering fixed, Internet and mobile telecommunications solutions, will use the AIReach 26 GHz system in both point-to-point and point-to-multipoint configurations for backhaul purposes. Wind currently covers 94 percent of Italy’s population with its mobile network. It has more than 30 million European customers using its various services. The LMDS system will be used for Wind’s second- and third-generation cellular networks, as well as for small-to-medium enterprise and last-mile access.

1/19/2004, Broadband Wireless Business Magazine Conifer Wireless Builds Kosova Network Conifer Wireless has completed the design and construction phase of a wireless network for IPKOnet LLC, a large Internet service provider (ISP) in Kosova. IPKOnet LLC plans to use the network to provide IP-based services to 75 percent of the populated areas in Kosova.

IPKOnet LLC will provide the services mostly to business and government institutions. The company is a commercial spin-off of IPKO, which was Kosova's leading nongovernmental, not-for-profit ISP, formed as part of the reconstruction efforts in Kosova. Conifer and its sister company, EMCEE Communications, provided the equipment and SkyPath software for the network. Conifer built five wireless access hubs, which are connected to IPKOnet’s microwave backbone and its network operations center in Prishtina. IPKOnet and Conifer are planning to extend the network to additional areas of Kosova in the spring of 2004.

NLOS Wireless Broadband Networks - eastern Holland / northern region of The Netherlands

February 12, 2003 - Navini Networks, Inc. and IntroWeb have teamed up to commercially deploy one of Europe’s largest and first non-line-of-site (NLOS) wireless broadband networks. The companies will initially target customers in eastern Holland and plan to expand the offering to the northern region of The Netherlands in the next year. IntroWeb selected Navini’s Ripwave™ system for deployment offering customers multi-megabit network speeds, a zero-install™ plug-and-play modem, and untethered broadband access anywhere in the coverage area. The always-on system provides uninterrupted broadband access to an area that has been historically underserved by other broadband technologies.

IntroWeb will initially offer high-speed data services to primarily residential customers who live in townships of 2,000-10,000 people and also to small-to-medium sized businesses in Holland. The first deployment, in Losser, Holland, a town of approximately 4,000 residents which had no broadband access previously, enabled friendly users to do everything from accessing the Internet at multi-megabit speeds, download streaming videos and more. Over the course of the next year, IntroWeb will deploy at least 70 Ripwave base stations throughout eastern and northern Holland, delivering high-speed Internet access. Three systems have already been deployed in eastern Holland with multiple other towns to be rolled out and ramped up quickly. IntroWeb is strategically aligned with an outside installation, commissioning and support company to provide propagation studies as well as site acquisition and tower selection.

INO provides wireless broadband access service to more than 1,000 residential, small office/home office and small-to-medium enterprise customers in approximately 30 areas in Norway. The new orders, which consist of Airspan’s WiPLL (Wireless Internet Protocol Local Loop) product, will enable INO to expand service to an additional 20 areas in Norway in 2003. Airspan recently acquired the WiPLL product from Marconi Communications (Israel) Ltd. for $3 million in cash, and owns a WiPLL product research and development facility in Lod, Israel.

11/15/2004, Broadband Wireless Business MagazineIberbanda Orders Alvarion's WiMAX-Ready Radios Iberbanda has ordered Alvarion Ltd.'s "WiMAX-ready" broadband wireless system to the tune of several millions of dollars, according to an announcement issued by the companies. The Spanish carrier plans to use Alvarion's BreezeMAX 3500 in the licensed 3.5 GHz band to deliver services to small businesses and residential customers in rural and suburban areas of Spain.

The areas to be served with the new radios include Andalusia, including the capital city of Seville, along with Catalonia, including the city of Barcelona and towns in the Pyrenees mountains. Iberbanda already serves corporations and large enterprises in 72 cities nationwide using Alvarion's WALKair equipment. The carrier additionally delivers services using the LMDS band and fiber optics infrastructure, providing high-speed Internet access, data communications and other connectivity services throughout Spain.

1/14/2002 - Ericsson will supply its Mini-Link LMDS systems to Skanova, which operates Sweden’s largest network for telecom, Internet and broadband services. Skanova, a wholesale network provider, is the first operator in Sweden to select an LMDS supplier since the Swedish government awarded spectrum licenses in December. Deployment of the network begins in the first quarter of 2002. On behalf of Svenska UMTS-Nät, Tele2's and Telia's existing organisations will carry out most of the contractual work. Tele2 and Telia each own 50% of Svenska UMTS-Nät. Svenska UMTS-Nät will provide the basic UMTS network. Tele2 and Telia will develop products and provide services to consumers separately and independently. Svenska UMTS-Nät will not provide services to end customers.

3/6/2002 - Ceragon Networks Ltd. and Svenska UMTS Nät AB have signed a multiyear supply agreement. Ceragon will supply its FibeAir high-capacity wireless system to Svenska as part of the operator's nationwide 3G network deployment in Sweden. UNSTRUNG - Zurich, January 18, 2005 - WiMax Telecom Acquires Spectrum WiMAX Telecom GmbH, a subsidiary of the Swiss WiMAX Telecom AG, has acquired the nationwide frequencies for WiMax in Austria. WiMAX Telecom was founded by Werner Kastzler, the former CEO of Telekom Austria and Ericsson Austria, together with Dov Bar-Gera, the founder of surfEU, RSLCom Austria and Airpage. All activities will, in the future, be steered by WiMAX Telecom AG, Switzerland, which already has concrete plans for a rollout among others in Switzerland. Provided the frequencies are made available by OFCOM (Swiss Federal Office of Communications), customers in Switzerland will be able to benefit from WiMax as early as end of 2005.

WiMAX Telecom GmbH was the sole provider to obtain the nationwide rights to the WiMax frequencies in Austria at the auction of October 4, 2004. With a range of 25 kilometers and transmission rates of up to 70 Mbps, this new radio technology is expected to become standard for wireless broadband internet access and mobile telephony. WiMAX, which provides a throughput rate 30 times faster than UMTS 3G, is the first technology offering both realtime and unlimited mobile services. The voice-over-IP technology, set to be incorporated in mobile phones during 2005, will enable customers to make mobile phone calls throughout Switzerland at far lower rates and without paying horrendous roaming fees.
